Hi Friends,
I’m happy to report that we held another successful swap meet at the Malcolm Smith venue in Riverside! Despite our less than terrific planning and promotion and a smaller parking lot, many turned out early for a fun, dry Sunday morning affair. Parts and bikes were a trading and many deals had. This swap meet is developing nicely into our vision for the British bike enthusiast. A huge thanks to Malcolm Smith and his crew. Our hostess Ashley Smith was busy running between a Can-Am Spyder promotion in the big lot and hanging out with the BSA swap meet crew. On the down side of the events world, it seems that “weather bug fear” has bitten many again! Cases in point were the last two rides, the always popular Cinder-cone Dual-sport and the Sunday Singles Ride. Both had many regulars checking radar and news-reports, but in spite of all, the routes were dry and perfect weather was had for both. My own Cinder-cone event did start with buddy “Lenny” loading bikes in a light sprinkle/rain that broke the minute we turned off Highway 15 and headed to Lucerne Valley. Not one drop of rain was felt after that and over a dozen riders had an absolute blast riding a pristine desert, amazingly lacking in other weekend off-road riders. We had around 100mi. of good riding all to ourselves! Though I missed the Sunday Singles Ride, it was reported that more then one person stayed inside watching gloomy news reports, but the 15 riders that did show up were treated to another perfect day with views so clear atop Mulholland Drive that Burbank was easily seen and on the other side, the view to Catalina Island was so clear, man-made structures were visible! Many thanks go to John Searock for stepping in and setting up the Singles Ride. As some may know, my Father had passed away and I was busy with memorial service and other details. My Dad was truly a lucky man. He was an 83 year old WWII veteran, successful businessman, great father and friend. Up till 5 months ago, he played golf every day in his retirement community. Though he really didn’t ride, he tolerated me and my bikes very well. I snapped the photo appearing below during a visit last year. Godspeed Dad! Love, Steve O.
